Author(s):

Abstract:

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is a novelist whose works are famous as they provide the subtle investigation of feminine power, the problem of cultural heritage and individual rights clash. This paper will discuss the manner in which Divakaruni describes the life of women between the compulsions of society and the desires of self-expression. Focusing on her novels The Mistress of Spices (1997) and Sister of My Heart (1999), this research explores how Divakaruni’s female protagonists navigate the tension between adhering to traditional roles and seeking autonomy in their pursuit of self-empowerment. The paper brings to the fore, the power of female bonding, guidance and emotional support to women, as these dynamics offer women the strength to overcome the oppressive cultural rules besides restoring their identity. Through an analysis of these characters' journeys of self-discovery, the paper illustrates the psychological, emotional, and societal challenges women face in asserting their independence within a patriarchal world. Finally, the novels by Divakaruni can be regarded as an eloquent account of empowerment in which the idea of becoming truly independent is not merely based on choosing to resist every man as an individual but also on the support of women and the necessary likeness of their problems and hardships.
