Abstract:

This research paper examines the sacredness and ethical depth of fraternity as portrayed by select characters in Indian mythology and in the mythological retellings of Kavita Kane. Mythology functions as a reservoir of moral, cultural, and philosophical knowledge. It offers a wide spectrum of human attributes—ethics, morality, loyalty, perseverance, faith, emotional resilience, and above all, fraternity. Like a two-sided coin, mythology reflects both ideal and flawed dimensions of human behavior, allowing readers to understand how one should and should not conduct oneself in society and family. Among these virtues, fraternity stands out as a noble force transcending caste, gender, and social structures. Characters such as Karna, the Suryaputra, embody fraternity beyond blood relations; Lakshman sacrifices his personal life for his brother Rama; Urmila, the biological daughter of King Janaka, relinquishes her rights for the abandoned child Sita; Devavrata (Bhishma) gives up his kingdom and dedicates his life to the protection of his stepbrothers; Vali, though betrayed by Sugriva, refuses to dishonour Sugriva’s wife Ruma. These instances illustrate that mythology consistently nurtures the essential ethical values that shape human society. The purpose of this study is to highlight the moral significance of fraternity and its transformative power. The theme is explored using both qualitative and interpretative methods, emphasizing its relevance in contemporary research discourse.
