The paper places great emphasis on environmental activism, as seen through the eyes of Terrence McNally, who constructed eco-consciousness in his literary narratives. Considering the methods of ecocriticism, the study analyses what McNally’s ecological dramas conceive in relation to the problems of the environment and the ecological perspective that underpins the interrelationship between society and the environment. The research applies a textual and ecocritical approach to focus on the problem: How does McNally, as an environmentalist, make the audience understand and respect the environment through the use of his plays? It comes as a surprise to note that in McNally’s works, all three factors intertwine: traditional morality, evaluation of environmental situation and activism. Such works lend credence to the notion that theatre practice can address the immediacy of a socio-political situation, which is perhaps what McNally seems to advocate. This paper addresses the broader development of eco-theatre as a movement that is driven by an urgent need to raise awareness for better relationships with the environment.
