Nature as a poetic muse: A comparative study of William Wordsworth and Sumitranandan pant

Author(s):

Arun Katara

Abstract:

This research paper undertakes a comparative analysis of the treatment of nature in the works of William Wordsworth and Sumitranandan Pant. Wordsworth is regarded as one of the founders of Romanticism along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge through their joint publication of the Lyrical Ballads in 1798. In the same way Sumitranandan Pant is revered as one of the most famous poet of Chhayavadi school of poetry in Hindi Literature. Wordsworth, a key figure of English Romanticism, and Pant, a leading poet of the Hindi Chhayavad (Romantic) movement, both elevated nature from a mere backdrop to a central subject of profound spiritual and philosophical inquiry. This study argues that while both poets perceive nature as a source of solace and a teacher of universal truths, their approaches differ significantly. Wordsworth's poetry often focuses on the sublime and moral lessons derived from nature, while Pant's work is characterized by a more mystical, sensuous, and introspective engagement with the natural world.
