From Cinderella complex to Ecriture feminine: Dissertating Indian cartoons through the feminist voices

Author(s):

SK Meenamani

Abstract:

With their seeds sown at the end of the twentieth century, cartoons in India have been blooming amidst the budding minds hitherto. Despite their vibrancy and vivid depictions, they withhold an unseen dark side. Such dark shadows are often biased and pre-structured. Framed with fixed templates, Indian cartoons polish the male gaze on one side and erase the female spirits on the other. Camouflaged under cultural norms, the portrayal of female characters is chiseled with prejudice. The paper attempts to expose the darkness hidden behind the coloured illustrations by keeping Feminist critics as torch bearers. Through the radical notions of Annette Kolodny, Colette Dowling, Laura Mulvey, and Helene Cixous, the research paper attempts to doubt the base through which Indian cartoons are built, to pinpoint their designed errors, to critique their constructed deficiencies, and to inquire into their female inadequacies. Overall, the purpose of the research paper is to deduct the Indian cartoons through the visions of Feminist critics.
