A comparative study of Shaktism and Western feminism: Exploring the Śakti cult through Western feminist theories

Abstract:

This study examines the relationship between Western feminism, a sociopolitical movement that promotes gender equality, and Shaktism, a Hindu religion that honours the Goddess (śakti) as the ultimate cosmic force. Western feminism focuses on overthrowing patriarchal systems through social, legal, and economic reforms, whereas Shaktism spiritually empowers women by depicting the feminine as the source of creation, destruction, and transformation. In this comparative study, the theological framework of Shaktism is compared to and contrasted with Western feminist theories, with a focus on communion, gender equality, and the critique of patriarchy. Shaktism may still be interpreted within patriarchal frameworks that restrict women's societal responsibilities, even while it opposes traditional male domination by raising the Goddess to a position of supreme authority. Beyond its spiritual symbolism, Shaktism's ability to promote true female empowerment can be assessed critically through the lens of Western feminist theory. The study also looks at how new ideas about women's roles in religion, society, and cultural discourse are brought about by the fusion of Eastern spirituality with Western feminist philosophy. This study offers important insights into the changing conversation on gender and power by linking these two paradigms and highlighting the possibility of a more inclusive feminist narrative that combines material advancement with spiritual empowerment.
