The research paper analysis the intricate journey of existential anguish and self-realization in Anita Nair’s Ladies Coupe, focusing on the protagonist Akhila’s quest for autonomy, identity, and meaning. Set against the backdrop of a train journey, the narrative becomes a metaphorical exploration of the self, where conversations with fellow women passengers unravel shared experiences of societal constraints, emotional turmoil, and personal awakening. Drawing on existentialist thought, the study examines how Nair constructs Akhila’s internal struggle between conformity and self-assertion, revealing a transformative passage from alienation to self-awareness. Through an analysis of narrative technique, symbolism, and character interactions, the paper highlights how Ladies Coupé not only addresses gendered oppression but also affirms the human need for authentic existence. This study aims to analyse the distinct phases of Akhila's journey, the protagonist of the novel, as she transitions from her initial hesitance to relinquish her status as the family's primary provider to her final acceptance of new experiences and life perspectives. This paper illustrates how the ladies coupe serves as a symbol that investigates The themes include gender inequity, domestic abuse, the pressure to conform to gender roles, marriage, parenting, and cultural expectations imposed on women. This study examines, from a feminist viewpoint, how women handle these problems in their pursuit of voice and agency.
