The Influence of Power Structures on Migration and Identity in Sharon Bala's 'Boat People'

Author(s):

Daniel Rubaraj Rathinasamy

Abstract:

Migration has recently become a highly relevant subject since it not only explains human mobility but also reveals societal power structures. Rather than ignore these power dynamics, it seems more important to integrate them into our understanding of this human drama. It is precisely this relation between migration and societal structures that is of crucial interest in this analysis. Besides exploring these foundational excursions, we explore how power relationships shape society's identity. This paper examines the journey that people like Priya and Mahindan undergo within the systemic inequalities of their respective societies.
