Deksha and Amandeep
The Bhakti movement was a time when women saints were breaking ground all over India from the beginning of the 6th century to the late 17th century. This movement contributed a lot to the female consciousness. Andal, Akkamahadevi, Karaikkal Ammaiyar, Bahinbai, Lal Ded, Mirabai, and Janabai were a few of the most celebrated female saints of the Bhakti movement. The wave of the bhakti movement travelled throughout India, starting from the south to the north, creating feminist changemakers in the name of female bhakti poets who embellished the pages of history and became a part of the cultural memory of the Indian female. The work produced by these saints was not just about devotion but also narrates how it was for women of medieval times in India to participate in an international movement. All kinds of women married unmarried widows and even courtesan participated, enriching the dimension of bhakti and giving history a documentary of different personalities of women archetypes. This paper is going to explore the Karl Jung archetypal women in light of spirituality and bhakti women. This study is going to focus on the development of female archetypes such as sage, mother, Lover and others. Female saints of this movement were the first silent echo of feminist voices which is why characterisation of these women saints per Karl Jung's female archetype is important for the development of the female psyche. The poems of the bhakti saints, especially female saints, cannot be just pinned down as holy; they broke down the accepted notion of the insignificance of shudras and women regarding religion and spirituality. The world of devotion experienced by the female saints of the Bhakti movement has so many layers of misery, love, acceptance, and pure intelligence but all of them have been covered under the umbrella term of sage archetype which notion is going to be re-examined by the paper. They have talked about marriage, education, bridal mysticism, isolation, and devotion, While reading their work and lives, anyone can understand the relationship that they had with God and what it produced for us. This topic dives into the contributions of the female Bhakti saints and what they added to the feminist voice of the human psyche.
