Hybrid identity in Na’ima Robert’s Far from home

Author(s):

Areej Almutairi

Abstract:

Na’ima Robert’s novel Far from Home (2012) deals with the post-colonial problem of hybrid identity for both the colonized and the coloniser. Tariro, the colonised black woman, and Katie, the white coloniser, are being hybridised in a colonised country, during and after colonization of Zimbabwe by Britain. They are caught up in a ‘third-place’ web of post-colonial political and social chaos which highlight the theme of the search for identity. Therefore, the main emphasis in this research is the postcolonial concepts of white supremacy, race, home loss and cultural identity. Two main concepts, viz. the notion of otherness and that of national identity, will be further highlighted throughout the paper.
