From the growing apprehension towards meaning since Modernism to an outright rejection of it in the ensuing ages of Literature

Author(s):

Amoghha Prakash Gupta

Abstract:

The purpose of penning down a piece of Literature has been for none other than the dissemination of one's ideas that are propelled through adhering to a philosophy, Besides being preoccupied with the ambitions of social change, Literary writers many a time have gone to the depths of exploring the absurdities of the existence in itself through their works, If one were to ascertain the development of the thoughts of the canonical writers of the English Literature in a chronological manner, The quest for meaning and their repeated recourses to Faith along with their incessant pursuit of deriving meaning against all odds, witnessed initially in the Literature of Dark Age and of Renaissance alike, started to abate significantly as the world progressed towards Modernism where its potential sombre and bleak nature that had been hidden hitherto got conspicuous before the spectators who were now coerced into being apprehensive and instead of a retreat from the ideas that impugned the authority of prevalent notions, the succeeding ages resulted into a further plunge into the abyss of despair to the point of rejecting the quest of meaning altogether.

The journey of this brewing apprehension hasn't been anything straightforward to say the least, There have been conditions and situations that warranted of such a critical approach towards existence in all the ages of English Literature, Whether It was the Religious disillusionment being the aftermath of the demarcation between Catholicism and Protestantism or the loss of humanistic values post the World war era, in both cases it is the clash of inherent values with the rational outlook of the mind that underpins the genesis of the thought provoking works of Literature.
