Author(s):

Sonia Singh and Devendra Kumar Sharma

Abstract:

The research article examines Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s The Forest of Enchantments through an ecofeminist perspective, emphasising the interconnections of nature, power, and femininity. It analyses the portrayal of the protagonist, Sita, not only as a legend existence, but as a symbol of protest and power, rebounds her narrative from the margins of the Ramayana. The work depicts a complex link between women and nature, wherein Sita’s identity is deeply connected with the planet, mirroring ecofeminist ideals. The research examines how Divakaruni resists patriarchal institutions and emphasises women's liberation through a symbiotic relationship with nature, emphasises themes of ecological harmony, resistance, and feminine strength. Eco-feminism focusses on the dominance of nature through people and the societal oppression of women. It primarily examines the oppression of women and environment with patriarchal culture. Thus, it explores both the supremacy of men over women and the dominance of humans over nature. The study also portrays Sita’s journey as a powerful ecofeminist critique of environmental degradation and prejudice against women.
