Abstract:

This paper examines the character’s experiences of self-discovery in Patrick White's book Voss and The Tree of Man, emphasising how their encounters with the natural environment lead to important philosophical and psychological realisations. This study sheds light on the significant connections between human identity and the natural environment as portrayed in the novel through an eco-psychological rereading of the text. The theoretical basis for this analysis is eco-psychology, a modern movement aimed at clarifying and balancing the interaction between humans and the environment.
This study aims to demonstrate how Voss and Stan Parker depicts the environment as a crucial component in forming the identities and experiences of her characters. The results show that the novel employs the Australian terrain as a stimulus for philosophical thought and character development, in addition to capturing it with striking depth in its depiction. This paper's scope includes a thorough examination of the ways in which Voss and Stan Parker uses its natural environments to elicit unique insights from its characters. These disclosures highlight a deeper understanding and care for the natural environment, indicating that the book may be viewed as an ecologically hopeful work.
