The prescriptive and descriptive approaches to language

Author(s):

Joginder Singh Ahlawat

Abstract:

The modern descriptive approach does not advocate irresponsibility in language’s use. The different usage of language are geared tightly to different occasions, and that people ought to be aware of this correlation between language and social use. Like traditionalists, the descriptive grammarians also make use of ‘rules’, The prescriptive grammarians’ rules are like the rules of a government, whereas the descriptive grammarian rules are like the rules of a scientist. Much of the unsatisfactoriness of traditional approach to language is due to its prescriptive attitude towards language. Traditional grammarians were concerned to make ‘rules’ about how people ought to speak and write. They were not concerned with analysing how people actually did speak and write. In this way, the older approaches were typically prescriptive, which prescribed strict adherence to follow certain ‘rules’.
