This paper undertakes a critical study of the representation of patriarchy and its impact on widows through the textual analysis of the Tulu novel Sati Kamale by S U Paniyadi. This study is qualitative-interpretative dealing with the intersection of Spivakan perspective of ‘Subalternity’ and Judith Butler’s concept of ‘Perfomativity’.
The paper examines the rigid impact of patriarchy on the life of the protagonist Kamale, despite her exposure to women’s rights. It also discusses how patriarchy locates a widow’s body where her sexuality is disciplined and regulated within its power dynamics which is shaped by historical and cultural discourses of the pre-independent colonial India.
