Wuthering heights: Dismantling the binary of heaven and hell

Abstract:

This research paper examines Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights as a critical feminist interpretation of patriarchal structures and gender roles in 19th-century society. Complicated characters and turbulent interactions make this novel unorthodox to traditional notions of masculinity and femininity and the oppressive forces that bind women and twist male identity. The struggle of Catherine Earnshaw between her desires and societal expectations is an indication of the limits placed on female autonomy; defiance of traditional gender roles manifests itself in a spirit of rebellion-an insubordinate feminist spirit. Similarly oppressive is the control exerted by characters such as Heathcliff and Hindley which mirrors the greater patriarchal systems that segregate women and impose rigid hierarchies. The text also addresses inheritance, property, and domestic power as tools of gendered oppression. This paper argues that with these encroachments, Wuthering Heights becomes a critique of patriarchy about how it spoils human relations and identities while offering prophetic indications towards the need for gender equality and social reform.
