India is the richest land in its language and literature for its multicultural aspects. The origin of Indian Drama can be traced to the Vedic Era but it got its strong footing when Kendriya Natak Akademi was established in January 1953. The year 1972 was a landmark year for Indian Theatre and many artists like Badal Sircar, Vijay Tendulkar, Mahesh Dattani, and Girish Karnad have contributed on a large scale in the modernization of Indian theatre with its progress. They brought innovations and fruitful novelty in terms of both thematic concerns and technical intelligence. Drama today has emerged as a powerful medium to project the changes that Indian society faces besides the issues related to gender, class, caste, and communities. Girish Karnad has portrayed socio-cultural, mythical, and historical themes in his plays. The present play Wedding Album deals with the common event in the life of urban middle-class families in India today and yet so fraught with anxiety of the impending ‘arranged’ marriage of a girl to a ‘suitable’ expat boy. The play gives insight into middle-class Indian society in the wake of technological advancement. The play is marked by irony, multiple issues, and questions of social and emotional nature which is the basic theme in present Indian theatre. It is an example of socially realistic literature which touches on the core of the spectacles of readers and suggests of making amendments by its moralistic approach to instruct the techno-advanced generation of the nation.
