Miguel Carlo C Marasigan

Abstract:

The research study sought to explore the experiences of Filipino Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) working alongside Japanese junior high school English teachers. The objective was to offer valuable insights for individuals considering this career and for Filipinos already residing in Japan. A total of nine Filipino ALTs from the JET program participated by completing detailed questionnaires, while seven engaged in comprehensive online interviews, employing a qualitative methodology guided by Lewis’ (2024) data analysis framework. The study utilized three primary themes based on Escarda’s (2024) work. The first theme focused on understanding Japanese teachers, including their personalities, teaching roles, views on English classes, and their impact on student participation. The second theme emphasized the various teaching and non-teaching responsibilities of ALTs. The third theme underscored the significance of grasping the ALT role. The research concluded with a comparison of data from Escarda’s elementary school ALT participants and the junior high school ALT respondents in this study, aimed at providing guidance for Filipino ALTs in Japanese educational settings. This resource aspires to enhance the experiences of both ALTs and Japanese schools, addressing potential challenges and ensuring the delivery of high-quality English education to Japanese students which echo the aspirations of Escarda’s paper.
