Poulami Ganguly and Dr. Aparajita Hazra
Adichie has represented the story of African women's subjugation, struggle and victory at the backdrop of Nigerian Civil War. She has meticulously exposed violence, massacre, death and destruction of the Igbo ethnic race and culture. The protagonists of the novel Olanna and Kainene belong to the Igbo community. This background can best exemplify the positive aspects of African women who have to fight against the tripartite structure of oppression - because of their class, race and gender in a male- dominated post- colonial society. The protagonists of the novel Olanna and Kainene are educated, wise, genuine, flexible, authentic, adaptable, desiring positive male companionship, nurturing, mothering, spiritual and the like which are encompassed in the theory of Africana Womanism as defined by Clenora Hudson- Weems in book Africana Womanism: Reclaiming Ourselves. With the aid of these traits they can resist patriarchal hegemony as well as the violence of war and keep their family members united till the end of the story. They hope and aspire to live in Biafra, evidently a state of the Igbos who are ideologically separated from Yoruba and Hausa communities of northern Nigeria. The image of half of a yellow Sun stands for freedom from bondage and autonomy, end of nihilism and anarchy and the establishment of order, peace, stability, progress and prosperity. This novel is a vivid documentation of struggle and subsequent victory of the protagonists Olanna and Kainene in the war- torn society.
