Disintegration of Family Relationships in Mahesh Elkunchwar’s The Old Stone Mansion

Author(s):

Abstract:

The theme of Disintegration of Family Relationships in literature refers to the breakdown of close family bonds due to conflicts, financial struggles, societal changes or personal ambitions. It explores how love, trust and unity in families weaken over time. Many literary works show how modernization, misunderstandings and changing values cause emotional distance and separation. In The Old Stone Mansion by Mahesh Elkunchwar, the theme of family breakdown is very clear. The Deshpande family, once rich and powerful, now struggles with financial problems and changing values. The family members who were once close now feel distant and disconnected. They argue over money, power, and personal ambitions. The older generation wants to hold on to traditions, but the younger members wish for freedom and change. This difference in thinking causes conflicts and misunderstandings. Economic struggles make the situation worse, leading to stress and broken bonds. The family members fail to adapt to new times, which increases their suffering.
