Comparing Historical and Modern Pandemic Depictions with Focus on Medical Trauma Bodily Autonomy and Social Collapse

Author(s):

Meenal Makharia and Sunil Kumar Jha

Abstract:

The paper will make a comparison of how pandemic trauma was described in Emma Donoghue the Pull of the Stars that was written during the era of influenza pandemic of 1918 with the present-day covid-19 novels The Fell and The Sentence. It examines how medical trauma, bodily free will and social breakdown is expressed through history and modern contexts within how the story lines have turned outward into less emphasis on the physical suffering and institutional authority to control towards the mental suffering, moral dilemma and ideological disappointment. Despite the fact that variability of the forms of crisis is true, the analysis reveals the vulnerability patterns and the persistence. The paper also ends that the stories of dying of pandemics are witness of a timeless human struggle of collective trauma and disruption of the entire society.
