Rethinking human- nonhuman relationships for sustainable development: An agential realist approach

Author(s):

Navdeep Kaur

Abstract:

Agential realism is a theoretical framework developed by physicist and feminist theorist Karen Barad. It combines insights from quantum physics, feminist theory, and philosophy to offer a new way of understanding the nature of reality, knowledge, and agency. By integrating the principles of agential realism with initiatives taken for sustainable development, more ethical and effective outcomes can be expected. The objective of this study is to focus on the need to understand the significance of this integration in detail. The concepts of sustainable development and agential realism are briefly explained at the beginning of this article. Second the relevance of their integration will be discussed by emphasizing the interconnectedness of all entities, suggesting that humans and the environment are not separate, but rather co-constitutive through their intra-actions. Agential realism provides a framework for rethinking sustainability, which is deeply relational, ethical, and interconnected. It encourages us to see the world as a dynamic web of relationships, where every action matters and has consequences.
