This research critically investigates the portrayal of women in Rabindranath Tagore’s selected plays from a feminist perspective. While Tagore is celebrated for his poetry, novels, and short stories, his dramatic works remain underexplored in feminist literary discourse. This paper situates Tagore within the framework of liberal, Marxist, radical, and postmodern feminist theories to illuminate his nuanced representation of women. It highlights how his female characters resist patriarchal constraints, assert agency, and challenge traditional gender roles, anticipating key feminist ideologies long before they gained global prominence. Drawing upon mythical and historical sources, Tagore redefined femininity in Indian literature, making him an early, intuitive feminist voice.
